Production Design

Hey all!

I saw a post by DreamWorks on LinkedIn a short while ago - they have a lot of open spots on their TV production teams. They were looking for a production designer and I didn't know what exactly that is, so I obviously checked what they wanted - A Production Designer is responsible for the final look of the show/film/art/design, etc.

Personally, if I could make everything anime, I would, BUT, I know that is not the only style in existence. It doesn't fit all stories, despite being a medium and not a genre. It's my thing for the time being. While I know you can tell pretty much every story in a medium, it's not really fitting for something like who framed roger rabbit or space jam or looney tunes back in action. Those need to be primarily live action, because that is what the story dictates. You also have to consider your audience - will anime fans watch this kind of story - if the answer is a resounding no, try something else - like a more PBR form of 3D animation, or more simplistic 2D animation - it all depends on what the story is. Some things are better with stop frame animation, like Morph or Chicken Run.

Story and budget will inform the decision of what style to follow. The bigger the budget, the more choice you have. The Avengers would have worked as an anime, but would NOT have been as successful at the box office. Real people tend to be more relatable, so if you can, it's generally best to make your super heroes realistic if you can. If you can't, it's best to go for that classic comic style or manga. Why? Because they have the stylistic sensibility to give the characters and issues they are facing weight. It's also what your audience expects and will respond to. BUT, historical 'heroes' can fit in any serious medium. The Prince Of Egypt is 2D, but it is a production you take seriously, despite the extreme stylization. Has been done as live action in the past, BUT WOW, 2D was the best choice for that script in particular - can't imagine it any other way. Also Dreamworks, lol, ironic that it's their post I saw! lol.

Jokes, funnies and punch lines fit the newspaper comic styles more.

So, when you write a story or receive a script or whatever, let the story play out in your mind and see what style or medium fits there - how would you dress the story, what outfit should it get? Make your stylistic choice based on that instinct primarily and don't let it get to you if you get it wrong - you probably will - we all do at some point and quite frankly, it's part of the process!

And if you're stuck, just make it anime or live action, LOL!

GOD bless you! (^^,)
