About Me

Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

A little something just thrown together

September 11, 2012
Hey people!!

Today I wanted to take my first shot at wood with Cycles and did some water, sky and so on, and this was the result:

The render was done at 10 samples. Not bad considering the low amount. Here is a free tip. While working with the render view, it is much much faster to set it to a single sample, Direct light and while layering textures to use an emission shader. It means that you don't have to wait nearly as long for a preview and you pretty much get to see a live result on your object. That rocks!!

Just for the fun and the finishing of this piece, I added some compositing to it. Doesn't look like I added all that much, but I really like the final look of it. Here is a before and after above and below respectively:

I learned a lot about mixing everything together and about how to get different texture combined to give a proper bump mapping effect, like yesterday's post:

Looking forward to getting to writing about all this, helping you all with this!!! Have a great one!

Thank YOU!!!!

Cycles part started!!

September 10, 2012
Hey all!!

I've been a bit quiet lately, because I've been finishing up the Blender Render section of the book and today I started with the Cycles Render section!!! Yey!!

The main focus for today I wanted to be caustics at one point, but then I realized it's more important to find out how in the world you can layer the textures like in Blender Render and HE helped me by reminding me of a tutorial Andrew did. His introduction to Cycles tutorial to be precise. Anyway, the details on the how is for...

Something cool!

August 31, 2012
Hey all!

Recently Andrew Price posted a video that someone made. A smoothing of the Mars Rover Curiosity making it's landing a week or more ago. When I saw it, I noticed that he only smoothed out the planet. Though it was magnificently done, it lacked a lot in the rest of the video's smoothness and immediately I was reminded of this program called:
Motion Perfect.

What it does is it draws missing frames for you so you don't have to. That means that if you slipped up and recorded your home movie ...

Remember the Ogg

August 30, 2012
Hey all!

I've gotten some feedback where people have struggled to open the videos I upload and send them (not just one, so please don't think you are being singled out), so I am re-posting about the video and audio format I use.

For video and audio I use OGG (no audio on the site yet, but I'm really working on getting something up here).
To play the OGG files, you do need to do one of two things (or both):
 - Download VLC and play the OGG files with that
 - Download the DirectShow filters here and...
