About Me

Marius Oberholster Hey! I'm having an incredible learning experience, not only learning how Blender works (yes, still learning), but also about Open-Source and the incredible software available. Stick around!

Early release - Confirmed

August 14, 2024
Hey all!

So, with much prayer and thought, I have decided to release what I have done on Exodus 7-12, kjv, so far. It is ~9mins, stretching the whole of chapter 7 and a part into chapter 8.

Let me first say, this is BY NO MEANS me quitting the project, lol, NO. When you're given an assignment, you have to finish it and finish it I will, by HIS grace, but, I have to be real and recognize that this will most likely take many more years, as I am working on this solo. If it only takes another 8 years to finish, it would already be a miracle, LOL, but again, I don't want to sit on the movie for the rest of my life and release something post-mortem that feels antiquated in technology and achievement and no one would care about. Today, releasing this part of a massive WIP is right.

I am beyond proud of this artsy take on Exodus, attempting to stick as close to scripture as possible. After doing the same with Genesis 1 and Esther 6, I thought John would be next, but nope! Mid-research, this was assigned, hehe.

The last render I did on this was around Feb/April of this year and of course, before that I started converting more assets and scenes to Eevee. It's a big step.

Here are some cool aspects:

Voiced all characters with plugins to alter my voice—super proud of how it turned out!
Characters were created using MakeHuman.
Animals, like the frogs, were modeled from scratch.
Extensive research was done to stay true to the context, with original models throughout.
Hieroglyphics were made with a custom font I based on real hieroglyphics, and some larger sections are 3D-modeled scenes rendered flat.
The palace design is based on an actual Egyptian palace complex.
Everything, except the moon shot, is Blender Render. It's a true stereoscopic render from Feb/April - Eevee is fast and light enough for this sort of thing.

As I said, still going, but it's a very slow grind.

Now, some other things to note:
 - There is a lot I would do differently and better today, as I've learned SOOOOO much, but I am still very proud of this.
 - I stand by the creative choices I made in the process, including interpretation of original language and potential for differences given context of today vs back then - zoological especially.
 - Things I'd do better and differently relate to technical issues, such as offsetting the snakes' animation, using more different angles for talking, better choreography for the magicians, better voice over performance, etc. You know, little things that make a difference.
 - Long road ahead with many opportunities to up the anti, and who knows, maybe the fact that the choreography is so flat right now, will make the better stuff later make more sense, as the plagues do get harder as they go. Gotta say, the choreography for the frog plague is very simple, but VERY cool - wouldn't change that at all!

I'm releasing this in 2D and in 3D.
The 3D is a conversion from 2D+depth, which as you know, is not native to Blender, but I love how it turned out and that you enjoy it too. The tools for Blender is available for free here:

This has, so far, been a massive labor of love and I hope to finish it before I'm 60, LOL. AI might help speed things up eventually!

Anyhow, here it is! Let me know what you thought and as always!
GOD bless you!! :D

Metal Shaders

March 16, 2022
Hey all!

A while ago, I became fascinated by metal in anime. Now, I know what you're not thinking: "But you're such a metal head! You should know this by now!" - to which I don't say anything, since you weren't thinking that, BUT, I will tell you what I discovered and it blew my mind! Still picking up the pieces, lol.

So let's rewind the clock a smidge. The 80's was a glorious time for anime and we got some of the coolest robot sci-fi stuff, between Voltron, transformers and some of the mobile ...

Integration is a process

February 23, 2022
Hey all!!
Last week we took a pleasant break from the film making posts and we're still kind veering off a bit, but it actually also does relate... confused? Me too, LOL. Anyway, this week I want to share about a recent movie that has made headlines, but not for the reasons we all had kinda hoped.

- JUMPS BACK A BIT -

A short while ago, we spoke about the style or medium of the movie and that applies here. When you're dealing with an established franchise and you go and flip it's medium to...

A different solution

February 16, 2022
Hey all!

I've done many tutorials over the years - roughly 60+. That's nothing to snuff at, hehehe. It takes many many many many hours of work just to make one, and we're not even talking about the actual recording and editing part!

Over the years, I've gotten requests to make the files available for download, which I had an issue with at the time, for many reasons, but one was that I had no stable way of sharing the files. That, and I take a VERY long time to make a decision on something, but ...
